Originally I wanted to call our project ‘No One’ but another band had already claimed that name. I was wondering if I could find a phonetic version, as in 'nowan', when I saw that if I added a ‘d’ it would become NOWAND.

In their simple complexity these three punctuation marks have always fascinated me as they perfectly illustrate what NOWAND means to me. The name has a curious sense of direction – first it marks the moment (now!), then it points towards something in the future (and?). Inevitably it also begs the question: 'and now?' – it seems to be both a question and an answer, open-ended and mysterious.

The three dots on their own are known as an ellipsis. They are used to indicate an omission of words, a pause, a trailing off of thought, to create a sense of suspense, or to allude to something left unsaid.

If you were to simultaneously move the exclamation and question marks into the centre, on to the period, it becomes an interrobang - a truly curious thing.
