Originally I wanted to call my project ‘No One’ but a band had already claimed that name. I thought maybe it could be ‘Nowan', which would be a phonetic version. But then I saw that if I added a ‘d’ it would become NOWAND.
In their simple complexity these three punctuation marks have always fascinated me as they perfectly illustrate what NOWAND means to me. The name has a curious sense of direction – first it marks the moment (now!), then it points towards something in the future (and?). Inevitably it also begs the question: 'and now?' – it seems to be both a question and an answer, open-ended and mysterious.
If you were to simultaneously move the exclamation and question marks into the centre, on to the full stop, it becomes an 'interrobang' - a truly curious thing.
